Conference 2010: ‘The Politics of Criminology’
The Department of Sociology and the Laboratory of Sociology of Youth, Leisure and Sports is pleased to announce that the 38th Annual Conference of the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control will take place at the University of the Aegean on the 1st September 2010 to the 5th September 2010. This conference will explore the theme of ‘The Politics of Criminology’.
The theme is divided into 12 streams:
Critical histories of criminology
Theorizing power, authority and legitimacy
Knowledge, ideology and hegemony
The nation-state in a global context
‘Crimes of the powerful’; ‘Crimes of the powerless’
The politics of imprisonment and detention
Class, poverty and marginalization
Gender, power and feminist critiques
Neo-colonialism, migration and borders
Criminalizing children and young people
Reflections on ‘harm’
Challenging the state and the politics of resistance
The conference will also celebrate the life, work and memory of Karen Leander 1949-2009.
